Unfortunately, there is no Lorax to speak for the trees, but we are mountain bikers who will.
With each wildfire season larger and more destructive than the last, the need for re-forestation increases each year. As fires become larger, more frequent, and increasingly destructive, this once natural phenomenon is going beyond the bounds of “healthy” fire that controls pests and disease. These cause widespread destruction of natural habitats, forced evacuations of thousands of animals, and threated to sterilize the soil.
Bike for the Trees is an organization of volunteer mountain bikers who view reforestation as social enterprise. We aspire to raise awareness of this growing problem while taking action to do something about it with tree-planting bike crews.
Leveraging our interests in mechanical engineering, innovation, design, sustainability, and social enterprise, we are building a fleet of tree planting mountain bikes complete with 1) an auger planting system-both pedal powered and electric options, 2) holster design to carry saplings, 3) eco-friendly attachable sapling planting bags, and 4) drilling stabilizers modeled after bucket trucks.
Together, we can make a difference in re-foresting after wildfires and contribute to fighting the forces of global climate change.
